I recently bought my first home and although I had little (no) money left I was determined to create the house of my Pinterest board dreams. So I decided to learn the skills myself and document the chaos on Instagram—hoping to inspire others to do the same without spending a fortune.
I tackled everything: sanding and painting walls, upcycling furniture, building a custom headboard, tiling, restoring wooden bannisters, and even plastering a wall (still shocked by this one).
I am happy to admit I have been working Mr ChatGPT pretty hard as my pocket sized builder — using it to troubleshoot problems, refine techniques, and visualise ideas.
I am slowly but surely creating a home I'm genuinely proud of and picking up skills I never expected to have. Beyond that, this work sharpened my ability to solve problems quickly and built real resilience. Every failure—and there have been plenty—taught me to adapt and keep moving forward, skills that have directly enhanced my professional practice.
I have found real fulfillment in creating something with my own hands, and if my journey inspires even a few people to tackle their own projects without being held back by budget, then every set back was worth it.
