TLDR
From a 10% time idea to a prioritised project - I used Claude to demonstrate new features and their impact, at speed.
The Bitesize app currently consists of static learning articles with minimal interactivity to promote active recall—the only option being poorly formatted flashcards. Meanwhile, the BBC was rapidly falling behind in leveraging AI in their mobile apps, as well as within tech teams to improve workflows and reduce effort.
I approached an engineer, proposing to use our 10% time to design and build new interactive features for the Bitesize app. To upskill in AI design software, and work efficiently within 10% time constraints, I used Claude to 'vibe code' my ideas, from wireframes to web prototypes.
The engineer used Claude in Xcode to turn my prototypes into a fully functioning app, called Bitesize Play, that we took to a secondary school to test it out on a group of GCSE students.
We also demoed our app at a Mobile Community meeting, which lead to multiple other demos being requested by interested senior stakeholders.
Due to the speed that Claude provides, we were able to design and build a complex app in just a few weeks that would traditionally take months, if not years at the BBC.
Users were overwhelmingly positive about the new app, describing it as more engaging, interactive, and effective for learning. They were especially excited about the AI generated flashcards, with many stating it would save time and effort.
From sharing with as many stakeholders as possible, the project went from a 10% time idea to a prioritised piece of work on the Bitesize app roadmap.
Through this exploration and sharing my learnings I have also helped other designers integrate AI in their workflow.
